Chakra Meditation - Throat

Editor on August 15th, 2008

Here is another lovely chakra meditation video.  This one is supposed to balance your throat chakra that controls communication.  I know I can always use any help I can get in communicating more effectively.  Again, even if you aren’t interested in chakras this is still a very pretty and soothing video.  One commenter mentioned it made her sleepy, me too…but that’s a good thing :)

Flower Personality Test

Editor on August 3rd, 2008

I was feeling all green and decided to find out what kind of flower I am.  WOW.  Not what I was expecting, but then I’m not that much of a gardener.  Heck I don’t even know what this flower is and wouldn’t know what it looked like if they hadn’t put a picture of it up for me :)  Apparently I am a Nigella.  The highlight was that people probably think I’m odd but I think I’m eccentric.  Yeah…that’s probably true.  Also said i find new experiences fulfilling and exciting…also pretty much true.

This is a short and sweet little test.  If you want to find out what kind of flower you are check it out here then let me know!

Scrabble

Editor on August 2nd, 2008

I love to play scrabble.  It is a great way to really get your mind off of anything that is bothering you because you have to think so much to play the game…if that made sense.  My problem is that I have no one to play scrabble with.  This is where Scrabulous comes in.  You can play a solitaire game or you can play against a computer.  I admit that the computer kicks my butt but, dang, it’s fun :)  You can also play against other people, but I don’t think I’m quite that good just yet!  Give it a try and tell me what you think!

Moving Mandala Meditation

Editor on August 1st, 2008

Hello everyone!  As I’ve mentioned before I love, love, love, mandalas.  I found this moving mandal with meditation music on Youtube and had to share.  I think the images are very pretty and the way the video changes from one image to another is mesmerizing.  If you aren’t familiar with mandalas this might remind you of a musical kaleidoscope.

Did it relax you? Make you feel like a kid again?

Love Yourself

Editor on July 10th, 2008

I have a song that I truly love.  The title is Video and the artist is India Arie.

I use to want to play this song to my classes but never could figure out how it would be appropriate in a social studies class ;)  I taught eighth graders and the peer pressure and self hate that I saw on a regular basis used to make me so sad.  I wish kids (girls and boys) would learn to ‘love yourself’.  Great lesson, great song.  I hope you take some time to appreciate how beautiful you are today :)

Do you think we should try to teach kids that their ‘worth is not determined by the price of their clothes’ and the other insightful tidbits from the song or was I right to leave that out of the classroom?

Constitution Quiz

Editor on July 7th, 2008

I’ve been thinking a lot about politics and government and where our country is heading and so I decided to find a quiz that ran along those lines and found this Constitution Quiz.  I missed one :(  which means I got nine others right!  Apparently the average is seven something so I guess that means I’m as smart as the average kid.  There is a longer test that I’ll take later and get back to you with the information.  I thought about giving you the answers here but I’d really like for you to go take the quiz yourself.  It is so important for people to know what their rights and responsibilities are and the easiest way to do this is to understand the Constitution.  All laws are (or are supposed to be) based on the Constitution so if you understand it you’ll understand everything else.  It really bothered me that I got an answer wrong and because of that I think I am going to spend a little more time reading the Constitution and a little less time reading magazines.

How did you do on the quiz?  Were you happy or disappointed with your score?  Do you think I’m a twit for missing one of the answers? :)

The Star Spangled Banner

Editor on July 3rd, 2008

The Star Spangled Banner was written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key.  While many people are familiar with the music from the song and some even know the first verse I have rarely found anyone who knows the entire song.  It is a beautiful poem as well as a song.  Take your time while reading it and try to enjoy the cadence.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Happy 4th of July!

Green Hour

Editor on June 22nd, 2008

I was reading a magazine earlier today and came across a small ad for Green Hour.  As a new mother with a technologically addicted lifestyle I’ve often wondered how I will keep my son from becoming a net potato.  I think this site has some wonderful things to offer.  It was created by the National Wildlife Federation which is a fantastic group.  I didn’t realize it as a child but they produced my absolute favorite reading early reading materials, Ranger Rick and Your Big Backyard.  I see they also now have a magazine called Animal Baby.  I will definitely be buying these for my son as he gets older.  Before I go any further I suppose I should tell you, you can check out Green Hour here.

Back to the Green Hour website.  They talk about how it has become increasingly difficult to unplug our kids even though most of us had unplugged childhoods.  This resonated with me right away.

The Discovery Journal & Activities page is nothing short of amazing!  It includes a little story about the current activity along with book recommendations, how to make or perform the activity, safety information,  a parent’s guide and several other nice resources.  The activities are updated roughly once a week.

Green Hour Blog is written by different people and is updated randomly but it has some great ideas and information for parents.

Community Corner There is a place to meet and chat with like minded individuals.

I really love that there is a website out there that can help me bring my child and myself back in tune with nature.  What did you think about this site?  Are there other Green sites that you particularly like??

PacMan

Editor on June 19th, 2008

I know I said I would get more serious but I do seriously LOVE Pacman.  It is probably one of my favorite ways to mindlessly spend several hours.  I even like the little song :)  I figured I would share this ridiculous love/addiction with all of you!  If you want to go down memory lane (or for you youngsters out there, make new memories) check out these PacMan games!

  • PacMan game as well as photos and a brief history.
  • This PacMan game has a better video quality and has all of the original levels as well as the Mrs. PacMan levels.
  • Mrs. PacMan is out there as well.  Wouldn’t want the ladies to feel left out :)

I hope you enjoy your PacMan time as much as I do.  Let me know which of the above you liked the most!
