The Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner was written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key. While many people are familiar with the music from the song and some even know the first verse I have rarely found anyone who knows the entire song. It is a beautiful poem as well as a song. Take your time while reading it and try to enjoy the cadence.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Happy 4th of July!

Separation of Church and State
This article talks about a teacher who has been fired for reportedly preaching to his class and burning the image of a cross into student’s arms. He taught for twenty-one years in that district and during that time taught creationism in his science class and refused to remove his Bible. Here is another version. How […]
Green Hour
I was reading a magazine earlier today and came across a small ad for Green Hour. As a new mother with a technologically addicted lifestyle I’ve often wondered how I will keep my son from becoming a net potato. I think this site has some wonderful things to offer. It was created by the National […]
PacMan
I know I said I would get more serious but I do seriously LOVE Pacman. It is probably one of my favorite ways to mindlessly spend several hours. I even like the little song :) I figured I would share this ridiculous love/addiction with all of you! If you want to go down memory lane […]
Graduation Statistics
I’ve said before that I wish there were national standards and that the education system in America was more streamlined and universal. Well it looks like we might be taking the first baby steps in that direction. This article talk about a possible new national mandate that would require specific graduation tracking processes. This would […]
IQ Test
Now that I am moving this blog to a more educational bent I thought I’d give an online IQ quiz (or two) a go. I had to take a real IQ test many years ago and I’ll just say that my score was somewhere between the two online quizzes :) But hey, they are fun […]
Mr. President
This video is a song that Pink sings for President Bush but I really think it is applicable to all political leaders. It even talks about No Child Left Behind, although not strictly in terms of education.
Even though I know that as the leader of a country (any country not just America) you must […]
Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou is one of my favorite authors, poets, speakers. I could listen to her read the phone book and be enthralled. Here is Maya Angelou reciting one of her poems.
As I said before I love Maya Angelou. Did you like this video? Do you like her? Who do you love to hear speaking?
Money Games
I don’t know anyone who isn’t looking forward to retirement. Countdown to Retirement was fun even if there weren’t as many options as I would have liked. If retirement is too far away and is depressing to think about, what about a Road Trip? I am not so good at games that require hand eye […]
